About Bump

Thus far the posts here have focused on preparations for Bump’s arrival.  Today, as time  allows, I’ll add a few things we know about Bump himself.

Bump is a boy.  We can’t confirm this yet, but if we are willing to trust the ultrasound tech, the doctor who formally read the ultrasound, and the popular vote at HMS back in the fall (because gender is an elected trait?!) we have a baby boy on the way.  In the  5 months since we were last able to see him on the ultrasound I have heard a lot of theories on how women “carry” their babies during pregnancy. Apparently “ball shaped” bellies = boys.  Most people up until now who have told me this already knew the  gender, so I didn’t necessarily put much stock in it. This past weekend I was at an academic conference, EduCon 2.4, and met tons of new people.  I am surprised at the number who asked if I was having a boy. I fact, anyone who hazarded a guess chose boy. Perhaps there is more to the shape theory than I initially thought.

Ilana just finished going through our boys’ dressers, removing all of their outgrown clothing. We’ve got about eight huge Rubbermaid bins filled with boys clothing all organized by size (0-6 mos., 6-12 mos., 12-18 mos., etc.). You’re more than welcome to come and shop at the Bernstein Boutique where the prices are amazing: as payment we only ask for your first born son (to hold and to ogle over).

Before my anthropologist sister weighs in on this I should say I do know the difference between gender and sex, but have nevertheless used them interchangeably. Sorry, Liz. As so often happens, common usage has trumped academic knowledge.
