10 – 12 Pounds

Oliver went to the pediatrician on Monday for his first set of immunizations. Oliver cried, of course, but who wouldn’t after 3 shots? A minute or two of nursing and all was forgotten. Pregnant friends, take note of this. Our nurse confirmed that this trick is well-proven to calm babies after their shots.

Waiting for my shots, enjoying a little blanket fiber!

Oliver weighed in at 10 lbs, 13.5 oz. He has gained 56% of his birth weight & grown almost 4 inches in the last 10 weeks. Can you imagine? This is why people say babies grow up in the blink of an eye… Because at this stage they do!
At our previous visit Dr Greg mentioned that somewhere between ten and twelve pounds most babies are biologically capable of sleeping through the night (ie, going 6-8 hours without nursing). I’m not sure if this means that babies born around 10 pounds achieve this milestone sooner as no matter what the birth weight it takes time for their stomachs to expand to accommodate enough food to sustain them longer periods of time. Although if a woman vaginally delivers a 10 lb baby, she deserves some kind of reward and longer sleep sooner seems as good a reward as any. Yesterday Oliver showed he was biologically capable, but I wasn’t ready for it. Oliver finished nursing a little after 9, was asleep by 10 and slept through to 4:10 this morning. Seven hours between feedings & six hours asleep. I didn’t go to sleep until close to 11… Thus missing my potential 7 hours. But now I know it CAN happen.
When will I get 7 hours? Hopefully soon!
