Baby Boy #2
The Horace Mann has had quite a few pregnancies amongst our staff this year and whatever is in our water appears to be y-chromosome flavored. Our second dragon baby boy made his way into the world this morning. Amanda and Kiel are so excited to welcome Maddex Francis into their family.
Congratulations to all three of you and I’m excited to have you joining us on this crazy journey. Enjoy every moment!!
Two boys down, two more to go this fall. Too bad we can’t create the HMS daycare to house all these bouncing baby boys!

Babies & Hobbits
A thought that has occurred to me several times on this crazy journey of parenthood is, “I have given birth to a very fine Hobbit.”
A typical day includes:
Breakfast
Second breakfast
Elevensies
Luncheon
Afternoon tea
Dinner
Supper
It’s a fine life, if you can get it!

Neglecting the blog
I’ve been neglecting the blog lately… And the email…
And the housework.
That said, I’ve taken advantage of outside time every day, so that has been a plus. In fact, I’m blogging right now from a restaurant in the South End called Coppa. It’s the perfect day for an outdoor mommy indulgence. And considering the puppy-craziness that landed me in this neighborhood, I figured I’d indulge.
Calle seems to like the shade near the bench. She’s a big fan of benches.
I was just about to write that Oliver is sleeping peacefully, thus facilitating this indulgence. However O has other plans.
Here is Calle being a good role model. Let’s hope Oliver falls back asleep.
More Pictures, Courtesy of Chorale Miles
By popular demand the entire Memorial Day photo album has been added to the Photos page (in the upper left corner).
As I mentioned before, Jeremy’s cousin Chorale took the pictures for us. Here’s her website info if you are interested in hiring her for a photo shoot of your own: Chorale Miles Photography
A Boy and His Dog
Jeremy’s cousin Chorale was kind enough to offer to take some family photos on Memorial Day. We have quite a few, but she caught Oliver and Calle looking at each other in this one.
Let’s hope this marks the beginning of a long friendship.
Alice says…
the name of this picture she sent us is, “Oliver is crazy cute!”
Who are we to argue with Alice?
10 – 12 Pounds
Oliver went to the pediatrician on Monday for his first set of immunizations. Oliver cried, of course, but who wouldn’t after 3 shots? A minute or two of nursing and all was forgotten. Pregnant friends, take note of this. Our nurse confirmed that this trick is well-proven to calm babies after their shots.
Oliver weighed in at 10 lbs, 13.5 oz. He has gained 56% of his birth weight & grown almost 4 inches in the last 10 weeks. Can you imagine? This is why people say babies grow up in the blink of an eye… Because at this stage they do!
At our previous visit Dr Greg mentioned that somewhere between ten and twelve pounds most babies are biologically capable of sleeping through the night (ie, going 6-8 hours without nursing). I’m not sure if this means that babies born around 10 pounds achieve this milestone sooner as no matter what the birth weight it takes time for their stomachs to expand to accommodate enough food to sustain them longer periods of time. Although if a woman vaginally delivers a 10 lb baby, she deserves some kind of reward and longer sleep sooner seems as good a reward as any. Yesterday Oliver showed he was biologically capable, but I wasn’t ready for it. Oliver finished nursing a little after 9, was asleep by 10 and slept through to 4:10 this morning. Seven hours between feedings & six hours asleep. I didn’t go to sleep until close to 11… Thus missing my potential 7 hours. But now I know it CAN happen.
When will I get 7 hours? Hopefully soon!
10:45 – 4:45
Last night after a dinner out Jeremy suggested that he could feed Oliver with some of the breast milk that hadn’t gone to the freezer and that I should pump and go to bed early. It was a great idea.
6 hours. That was Jeremy’s gift to me last night. 6 hours of sleep! No feedings. No diaper changes. I did have a brief wake up when Jeremy and Oliver came into the bedroom, but that didn’t last long. It has been more than 9 weeks since I had 6 straight hours of sleep.
I’m still running a sleep deficit but last night I slept 6 hours.
Thank you Jeremy!
Friday Morning Chat
Here’s a little video clip of some “boy talk” between Jeremy and Oliver. Oliver has become quite chatty recently.
Enjoy!
Hmm… I’m not sure how to make this play in the post. It’s a small download for now. I’ll try and fix it later on. I think we got it working…
In the mean time, a candid shot taken during that chat:
